God created angels first. They are made of light, have no gender or free will, and must obey and worship God. God then created jinn. Jinn are made of smokeless fire, have free will to do good or bad, and are supposed to worship Allah (Quran 51:56). Satan (Iblees) was a jinni (singular, masculine form of jinn) who worshiped Allah (God). He was the most righteous of all the jinn, so much so that he was elevated to a high position amongst the Angels. Allah then created Adam, the first human, from clay or earth (Quran 15:26-27). Allah ordered everyone (angels and jinn including Iblees) to bow down before Adam. Iblees didn’t want to bow down because he felt that he was superior to Adam as Iblees was made from fire and Adam from clay. God then cursed Iblees but Iblees begged Allah to spare him from punishment until the Day of Judgment. Allah agreed. Iblees then vowed to misguide humans. Adam was living in Heaven. Allah then created Eve (Hawwa), a female human. God told Adam and Eve to enjoy Paradise and eat whatever they wanted except for the fruit of a particular tree. Iblees was also in Paradise and whispered into the hearts of Adam and Eve to eat from the forbidden tree. Adam and Eve ate from that tree and in doing so, God forced them down from Heaven to stay on earth for a while until they and their descendants (mankind) are resurrected on the Day of Judgment where each individual, including jinn, will either go to Heaven or Hell, based on their actions and belief in the world.
Creatures in the World
Before we begin talking about black magic and ruqyah, it is helpful to know the categories of creatures that exist in the universe. God (Allah), who has not parents, relatives, or children, created 3 groups of creatures.:
- Jinn (djinn, genie)
- Satan (Azazeel, Iblees, The Devil, Shaytan)
- Good jinn
- Bad Jinn (Devils)
- Humans (they are made of clay and have free will to do good or bad)
There are also animals like dogs and cats but I’ll leave them out of the categories above.
How People First Learned Black Magic
Two angels, Harut and Marut, came down to Babylon and told people and jinn that they were sent by God as a trial. They discouraged people and jinn from learning magic from them to avoid being disbelievers. Some people and jinn still disbelieved and chose to learn magic from these angels including magic on how to separate a husband from his wife.
And when there came to them a Messenger from Allâh (i.e. Muhammad Peace be upon him ) confirming what was with them, a party of those who were given the Scripture threw away the Book of Allâh behind their backs as if they did not know! (101) They followed what the Shayâtin (devils) gave out (falsely of the magic) in the lifetime of Sulaimân (Solomon). Sulaimân did not disbelieve, but the Shayâtin (devils) disbelieved, teaching men magic and such things that came down at Babylon to the two (angels,) Hârût and Mârût, but neither of these two angels taught anyone (such things) till they had said, “We are only for trial, so disbelieve not (by learning this magic from us).” And from these (angels) people learn that by which they cause separation between man and his wife, but they could not thus harm anyone except by Allâh’s Leave. And they learn that which harms them and profits them not. And indeed they knew that the buyers of it (magic) would have no share in the Hereafter. And how bad indeed was that for which they sold their ownselves, if they but knew. (102)
Surat Al-Baqarah (The Cow) 2 – (101-102)
Azazeel is Satan’s name. Iblees means “to despair” and Azazeel despaired of the mercy of God, thus earning him that title. The Arabic word jinn is from the verb ‘Janna’ which means to hide or conceal. Thus, they are physically invisible from man as their description suggests. This invisibility is one of the reasons why some people have denied their existence. Jinns can be Muslim or non-Muslim. In many aspects of their world, jinn are very similar to humans. They eat and drink, they marry, have children (Satan himself has children) and they die. The life span however, is far greater then ours ,e.g. thousands of years. They can be much taller than human as well, e.g. 13 feet. Like us, they will also be subject to a Final Reckoning by God. They will be present with mankind on the Day of Judgment and will either go to Heaven or Hell. Unlike humans, they sleep during the day and are awake at night. They are also shapeshifters (can change shape) into any object including a human. The can fly anywhere almost instantaneously. Through their powers of flying and invisibility, jinn are the chief component in occult activities. Voodoo, black magic, poltergeists, witchcraft and mediums can all be explained through the world of the jinn. Likewise, so can the illusions and feats of magicians.
Fortune-Tellers & Knowledge of the Future
One of the most frequent activities associated with jinn is fortune telling. Before the advent of the Prophet Muhammad, fortune-tellers and soothsayers were widespread. These people would use their associates from the jinn to find out about the future. The jinn would go to the lowest heaven and listen to the angels conversing amongst themselves about events of the future which they heard from God. The jinn would then inform the fortune-tellers. This is why before the time of the Prophet many fortune-tellers were very accurate in their predictions. However, upon the Prophet’s arrival the heavens were guarded intensely by the angels and any jinn who tried to listen was attacked by meteors (shooting stars) (Quran 15:17-18 and 37:1-10). The Prophet also said: “They (the Jinn) would pass the information back down until it reaches the lips of a magician or fortune-teller. Sometimes a meteor would overtake them before they could pass it on. If they passed it on before being struck, they would add to it a hundred lies” (Saheeh Al-Bukhari). Thus, it is clear from this as to how fortune-tellers get predictions of the future sometimes right.
Qareen & Knowledge of Other People
Fortune-tellers also operate through the Qareen. The Qareen is the jinn companion which is assigned to every human being. It is this jinn which whispers to our base desires and constantly tries to divert us from righteousness. The Prophet said: “Every one of you has been assigned a companion from the jinn. The companions asked: Even you O’ Messenger of God? And the Prophet replied: Even me, except that God has helped me against him and he has become a Muslim. Now he only tells me to do good” (Saheeh Muslim). Because the Qareen is with a person all his life, it knows all that has happened to the person from the cradle to the grave. By making contact with the Qareen, the fortune-teller is thus able to make out that it is he who knows about the person. When you do ruqyah on a possessed person and speak to the jinn, you can ask the jinn questions. For example, if you ask a question about someone by showing the jinn a picture of that person, the jinn can almost instantly get the answer to your question by first asking the subject’s Qareen.
Jinn can be many different colors and can change color. Evil, non-Muslim jinn are black in color. Muslim jinn are white. When a healer does ruqyah on a possessed individual and converts the jinn from being a non-Muslim to being a Muslim, the jinn’s color changes from non-white to white. The color of the jinn is important in the healing process.
The 3 Sources of Problems
There are 3 causes for someone to be affected by the unseen:
- Black magic
- The evil eye
Black magic is where a practitioner of black magic worships bad jinn and sends black magic, with or without jinn, to victimize someone. Ordinary people can and do hire sorcerers to inflict harm on other people for various reasons. This is the most common of the three sources of problems.
The Evil Eye
The evil eye is where someone or a group of people see something or someone and cause damage or harm to a person or object. It is most often caused by jealousy. For example, if someone sees that you have a nice house or car, they may be jealous and with or without intention, cause you to experience problems with your house or car. Since consequences of the evil eye can occur without intention, it is always good to say “Masha Allah” which literally means “God has willed it.” It is a phrase that expresses appreciation, joy, praise, or thankfulness for an event or person that was just mentioned.
Jinn are invisible creatures that live amongst humans. There are many reasons why jinn would interfere with humans, but in all cases, there must be a reason and there are always three possible ways:
- the jinn is inside the person’s body
- the jinn is outside the person’s body
- the jinn goes in and out of the person’s body as he likes
When he is inside the body, he may possess the person and speak through him. This may be permanent, periodic or occasional. Like humans, some jinn are bad and they may just want to harm people. Sometimes, jinn may want revenge on a human who accidentally hurt the jinn by accidentally dumping hot water where the jinn may happen to be at the time. Jinn may also scare and harm people who moved into a house or apartment where the jinn was living. These types of houses are usually called “haunted houses”.
Some people think that jinn are attached and do not understand why some possessed people continue to be possessed during Ramadan. Actually, devils are the ones that are attached. Common jinn are as free as humans. Devils never possess humans, only common jinn do. Devils only whisper to the human’s thoughts.
The 4 Ways Black Magic is Sent to a Victim
There are four different ways black magic is sent to a target victim:
- Stepped on
- Put in the body
- Made by distance
Sometimes, black magic is sent to a victim in food or drinks for the victim to eat or drink. Food-related black magic will, in 95% of the cases, cause digestive, stomach or intestine problems such as burns, nausea, vomiting, lumps, gases, stings. These issues are permanent in general, but they sometimes last only for a short period of time and then disappear. They are medically unexplained but burns might be soothed by a medical treatment. When a person suffers from these gastric problems and has black magic symptoms, he can almost be sure he is victim of “eaten” black magic. Note that black magic may also be eaten accidentally, e.g. it was meant for someone but someone else ate it. To have a person “eat black magic”, a few drops of the black magic is put in food or a drink. It has no taste. The black magic then gathers in the stomach or the intestines and remains stuck there like glue for a long time. The black magic, however, may spoil after a thirty year period.
“Stepped-on” black magic is mostly accidental. The black magic is placed somewhere by someone for one reason or another and someone steps on it. It mostly has effects on skin: cuts, eczema, psoriasis and medically-unexplained pain in the body, mostly on legs, sometimes changing places. It may also cause hair to fall out or weakness in the legs. There is no effect of breaking a couple apart, preventing work or other effects. It only has a physical effect. Sometimes black magic is put in someone’s way – usually in front one’s house – so they’ll step on it. It will then have the intended effect and not only affect the skin.
Put in the Body
Black magic that is put in the body means the sorcerer sends jinn to put the black magic in someone’s body. It is generally put in a woman’s ovaries to prevent pregnancy, in man’s sex organ to cause impotency, or anywhere in the body to cause pain and dysfunction. It may also be put in the body along with jinn sent by the sorcerer so that as long as the black magic is in the person’s body, the jinn can’t leave the body either. If a victim of black magic seeks to be cured and the exorcist tries to remove the jinn from his body while they are linked to the black magic in his body, then if the exorcist does not know that there is black magic in the victim’s body or does not know how to remove the black magic, then the jinn will not leave the victim’s body no matter what the exorcist does. Thus, black magic may be put in the body only to complicate the healing of the person who tries to get cured. You may think of it when you feel a permanent or recurring pain in a specific place.
Made by Distance
Black magic sent remotely / by distance is the most classic and frequent kind of black magic. It may be complicated by using symbols, e.g. a knot. Following are some ways black magic is done remotely.
- Black magic hung in a high place
Black magic hung in a high place, e.g. a tall tree, will dominate and envelop the victim so that he will turn around and around in his life to the same point instead of progressing. It may also cut his mental state of mind off from reality so that he feels that he lives in an imaginary world full of doubt, fear, indecision, mood swings, etc. It also causes a heavy head or headaches and will make him dream of rising to high places and then falling down.
- Black magic buried in the ground
Black magic buried in the earth sucks the strength and energy of the victim causing him to have restless sleep and giving him a depressed look and the mentality of a loser.
- Black magic buried in a graveyard
Black magic buried in a graveyard will cause the victim to behave as if he’s dead. Apathetic and linked with death, he doesn’t see any future for himself and lives on a day-to-day basis. He will think about death and dream of dead people or graves.
- Black magic put in a well
Black magic put in a well causes the person to remain “in the bottom of the well”, financially speaking, and never manage to come out of that situation.
Elements Used in Black Magic Symbols
There are different elements or objects used and ways to create the symbols used to carry out black magic. Following are some of them.
Black magic made with menstrual blood causes gynecological problems, difficulties in having sex and changes in feelings of affection and love.
Chain or Padlock
Black magic with a chain or padlock will chain the person resulting in a loss of business. It may also chain jinn to the person.
Knots are often used to block communication. As soon as the victim starts discussing something, a dispute occurs. It is also used to set recurring obstacles in life – each time one overcomes an obstacle, another one will occur. “Knots” in the victim’s thinking will stick one thought in his mind so he doesn’t change his mind and prevent him from being able to think with reason. Knotted strings come out in dreams as snakes.
Black tar is often used in black magic to create a darkness effect – the victim would see life dark and depressive, and people will see him that way and avoid him.
Needles are put in dolls to sting the body of the victim as if nails were planted in him.
Different things and methods can be used to physically hurt a victim such as by burning, cutting, or burying things. The types of symbols used are really unlimited and sorcerers continue to invent new recipes, e.g. fat to make a person fat, donkey’s ears to make someone stupid, dogs to make someone mean and aggressive, a frog to make someone repulsive, official papers to block one from getting important official documents, etc.
Multiple Black Magic
Combined / Repeated Black Magic
All black magic types mentioned above may be endlessly combined. Except if treated, black magic will stay with someone for a lifetime and they just add up. Someone could be so hateful that he would send a lot of black magic and repeat this regularly so the victim will quickly suffer from a high number of black magic. Once overwhelmed with black magic, the victim totally loses control of himself and his life.
Serial Black Magic
With serial black magic, a sorcerer would do a lot black magic at once in such a way that whenever one is removed, the next will start. You would then see the victim getting better for a few days but then suffering again. The sorcerer may check on the status of the victim. The sorcerer would be informed by jinn every time the victim cures himself. The sorcerer would then repeat the black magic. The difference with the first method is that the black magic is different every time. The latter method is very rare and means that the sorcerer personally wants to harm the person.
Black Magic to Combat Black Magic
Some people think they can do black magic for “good” instead of evil. That is completely wrong. Black magic is an act of breaking faith regardless of the purpose. Some people want to succeed in marriage, an exam or a court trial. If black magic is used to accomplish those goals, then it is forbidden. If there is a black magic-related evil effect, it can be eliminated by eliminating the black magic. Otherwise, one should not interfere with the natural course of things. To get more blessings in one’s life, there is only one way: good deeds, prayer, being good with others, especially close relatives, and repent from sins.
Do Nothing and Leave Everything to God
Some people think you should “rely on Allah” and refuse to relate their troubles to black magic. First of all, notice that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Allah, The Bearer of Greatness and Majesty, has created for each illness its remedy, so cure yourself!” (Reported by Ahmad) Money and relationships with others, etc are gifts from Allah. You cannot allow yourself to lose by neglecting to make an effort to achieve them. Remember, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and his companions faced all kinds of problems with maximum wisdom and using all possible means. Therefore, it is a mistake to think you can solely count on Allah AND neglect making an effort yourself to achieve your goals. Reliance without action or efforts doesn’t work. On the other hand, it is also a mistake to blame black magic for problems that are not due to it. One question establishes the difference: do these problems have a logical explanation? Can we overcome them using normal efforts and means?
Varying Effects of Black Magic
Black magic worsens the weaknesses of a person such as anger, doubt, and shyness. We then move from a state of weakness to an uncontrolled slide. The victim has no control of himself and cannot do what he thinks is right for him. Black magic does not have the same effect on different people. For example, if a couple is very solid and both are gentle and respectful to each other, black magic would only create misunderstandings and troubles between them. But, a couple whose pride and selfishness are strong will immediately be blown away by black magic.
Benefits From Being a Victim of Black Magic
You’re probably wondering how there could possibly be any benefits from being a victim of black magic. Well, there are some if you look at it from a certain point of view. Following are some benefits:
- It has the potential and often does bring you closer to Allah because it makes you believe in jinn and the power of the Quran in curing yourself. This usually occurs after you’ve made an effort to and/or have successfully gotten cured. The apparent benefit of this may occur here, in this world, and/or in the hereafter.
- It you get cured, if gives you confirmation that the Quran is a cure, that Islam is the true and correct religion, and that God, jinn, heaven, hell and various other things mentioned in the Quran are real and exist.
- Any good deeds done by your enemy will be credited to you on the Day of Judgment.
Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: “The Messenger of Allah (p) said: “Do you know who is the bankrupt one?” The people said: ‘The bankrupt among us is the one who has neither money nor property.’ He said: “The real bankrupt one of my nation would be he who would come on the Day of Resurrection having (performed) prayers, (observed) fasting and (spent in) charity, (but he will find himself bankrupt on that Day due to depleting these good deeds) because he despised others, uttered slanderous terms against others, unlawfully devoured the wealth of others, shed the blood of others, and beat others. Therefore his good deeds would be credited to the account of those (who suffered at his hand). If his good deeds are exhausted, their sins (i.e., those he oppressed) will be entered in his account and he will be thrown into the (Hell) Fire.” [Sahih Muslim 2581]
